How to Get Your UK Student Visa
Step-by-step guide to the Student visa (formerly Tier 4) process for applicants from China.
Apply to UK universities through UCAS (for undergraduate) or directly to the university (for postgraduate). Many UK universities accept Chinese Gaokao scores as an undergraduate entry qualification โ check your target university's requirements.
Receive your CAS from your UK university after accepting an unconditional or conditional offer that has become unconditional.
Gather all required documents including financial evidence, English language results (IELTS/TOEFL/Duolingo), and academic transcripts. Bank statements must cover 28 consecutive days.
Complete the UKVI Student visa application at gov.uk. Pay the visa application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge โ check gov.uk for current amounts as these change periodically.
Book a biometric appointment at a Visa Application Centre in China โ available in major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang, and others.
Attend your biometrics appointment with all original documents and your appointment confirmation.
Await a decision (typically around 3 weeks for standard applications). Collect your Biometric Residence Permit from your UK university within 10 days of arrival.

CAS reference number from your UK university
Financial evidence โ bank statements for 28 consecutive days (see below)
Academic qualifications โ Gaokao results (undergraduate) or degree certificates and transcripts (postgraduate)
English language certificate โ IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or Duolingo English Test (check university acceptance)
ATAS certificate if studying certain sensitive postgraduate subjects
Tuberculosis (TB) test results from an approved clinic โ required for Chinese nationals
Bank Statement Requirements
Financial evidence is critical. This is one of the most common reasons for visa refusals โ make sure you understand exactly what is required.
Financial Evidence Required for China
Must show maintenance funds plus first-year tuition. London: ยฃ1,334/month ร 9 months = ยฃ12,006. Outside London: ยฃ1,023/month ร 9 months = ยฃ9,207. Add first-year tuition fees (typically ยฃ18,000โยฃ35,000). Funds must be held for 28 consecutive days. Chinese RMB bank accounts are accepted if the balance converts to the required GBP amount โ use approximate current exchange rates, noting these fluctuate. Check gov.uk for the most current maintenance figures.
