What is the TOEFL iBT?

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an English language proficiency test administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service). The most common version used for university admissions is the TOEFL iBT (internet-based test).

The TOEFL iBT consists of four sections:

Reading

3–4 passages, academic texts

Listening

Lectures and conversations

Speaking

Integrated and independent tasks

Writing

Integrated and independent essays

The total score ranges from 0 to 120 (each section scored 0–30). TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years. You register for TOEFL through the ETS website (ets.org). The TOEFL at Home edition is also available for students who cannot access a test centre — this is the same test taken at home under online proctoring.

TOEFL vs IELTS for UK universities

IELTS is more widely accepted across UK universities and remains the most commonly used English language test in the UK. If you are applying to a range of universities — including some smaller or specialist institutions — IELTS is the safer choice as nearly all UK universities accept it.

However, TOEFL iBT is accepted by most Russell Group universities and major UK institutions. If you have already taken TOEFL and scored well, check whether your target universities accept it before deciding to retake a different test.

Important: Some UK universities still prefer IELTS and may not accept TOEFL for all courses. Always check the specific English language requirements on the course page at your target university — do not assume TOEFL is accepted.

TOEFL score requirements at UK universities

Requirements vary by institution tier and course. These are general ranges — always check the specific requirement on your target course page.

University tierTypical TOEFL iBT totalExamples
Russell Group universities100–110UCL, LSE, Manchester, Edinburgh, King's
Mid-ranked universities88–100Coventry, Leicester, Huddersfield, Hertfordshire
Foundation / pathway programmes72–88Pre-sessional and international foundation years

These are typical ranges only. Individual courses — especially Medicine, Law, and other professional programmes — may have higher requirements. Some universities also set minimum scores for individual sections, not just the overall total.

Where to take TOEFL in your country

ETS operates TOEFL test centres globally. Test centres are available in all major cities across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, China, India, and Pakistan. The TOEFL at Home edition is also available if you cannot access a test centre.

Register directly through ets.org and search for available test dates and locations near you. Do not use unofficial third parties to book TOEFL tests.

TOEFL preparation tips

Use official ETS practice materials

ETS offers free practice tests and sample questions on ets.org. These reflect the actual test format and scoring more accurately than third-party materials.

Practise integrated tasks

The Speaking and Writing sections include integrated tasks that require you to combine reading, listening, and writing or speaking skills. These are different from IELTS — practise them specifically.

Build academic vocabulary

The Reading section uses academic English. Focus on building vocabulary from academic texts — news articles, university lecture materials, and academic journals are good sources.

Take at least one full timed practice test

The TOEFL iBT takes approximately 3 hours. Take at least one complete timed practice run before test day to build stamina and manage timing across all four sections.

Frequently asked questions

Is TOEFL accepted at UK universities?

Yes. Most major UK universities, including Russell Group institutions, accept TOEFL iBT as proof of English language proficiency. However, IELTS remains more widely accepted — always check the specific requirements on your target course page, as a small number of UK universities still prefer IELTS only.

What is the minimum TOEFL score for UK universities?

It varies by institution and course. Russell Group universities typically require 100–110 iBT overall. Mid-ranked universities generally ask for 88–100 iBT. Foundation and pathway programmes may accept scores from 72–88 iBT. Individual section requirements also apply at some universities — check the specific course requirements.

Is TOEFL or IELTS better for UK university applications?

IELTS is more widely accepted across UK universities and is the preferred test at many institutions. If you have a choice, IELTS is the safer option. That said, TOEFL is accepted by most Russell Group and major UK universities, so if you are stronger in TOEFL format, it is a valid option — confirm acceptance with your target university first.

How long is TOEFL valid for UK visa purposes?

TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. This applies both for university admissions and for UK Student visa purposes. Your score must be valid at the time of your visa application, not just your course application.

Can I use TOEFL for a UK student visa?

The UK Student visa requires you to meet the English language requirement set by your university sponsor. If your university accepts TOEFL and you have met their threshold, TOEFL can satisfy the visa's English language requirement as part of your CAS. However, this depends on your university listing TOEFL as an approved test — confirm with your university's admissions or international team.
