How to Get Your UK Student Visa

Step-by-step guide to the Student visa (formerly Tier 4) process for applicants from UAE.

1

Receive your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number from your UK university. This is issued after you accept an unconditional offer and pay any required tuition deposit.

2

Gather all required documents including financial evidence, English language certificate (if required), and academic transcripts. Bank statements must cover 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before your visa application date.

3

Create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account at gov.uk and complete the Student visa application. Pay the visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) โ€” check gov.uk for current amounts as these change periodically.

4

Book a biometric appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in the UAE โ€” centres are available in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Upload your supporting documents to the UKVI portal before attending.

5

Attend your biometric appointment to provide fingerprints and a photograph. Bring all original documents and your appointment confirmation.

6

Await a decision. Standard processing is typically around 3 weeks; priority services may be available at additional cost. Check gov.uk for current processing times.

7

Once approved, collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from your university or a designated Post Office within 10 days of arriving in the UK.

Documents Checklist

Make sure you have all of these before submitting your visa application. Missing documents are the most common reason for delays and refusals.

Valid UAE passport (valid for the full duration of your course)

Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number

Financial evidence โ€” bank statements covering 28 consecutive days (see below)

Academic qualifications โ€” degree certificates, transcripts, and school leaving results

English language certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent) โ€” may be waived if you studied at a British curriculum school in the UAE

ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) certificate if studying certain sensitive postgraduate subjects

Bank Statement Requirements

Financial evidence is critical. This is one of the most common reasons for visa refusals โ€” make sure you understand exactly what is required.

Financial Evidence Required for UAE

You must show sufficient funds to cover living costs plus first-year tuition fees. For London: ยฃ1,334/month ร— 9 months = ยฃ12,006. Outside London: ยฃ1,023/month ร— 9 months = ยฃ9,207. Add your first-year tuition fees (typically ยฃ15,000โ€“ยฃ35,000 for postgraduate; ยฃ18,000โ€“ยฃ30,000 for undergraduate). Funds must be held for 28 consecutive days. UAE dirham accounts are accepted if the balance converts to the required GBP amount. Check gov.uk for the most current maintenance figures as these are updated annually.

Key rules to remember: Funds must be present for 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before your visa application date. Do not move large sums in or out during this window. If your university confirms your tuition is paid, you may not need to show tuition fees separately โ€” check your CAS for details.
